What a brilliant article. I found myself nodding away with it, that knowing nod. Out of 4 attempted assaults and 1 actual assault (I still have problem wlith the R word) I knew all bar one of them and never reported any of them either. I constantly have the doors in my house locked for fear of a man coming to get me. I popped over the corner shop with a friend the other day, I didn't lock my door and she asked me why as I always have it locked. She was surprised when I explained I'm not worried about someone taking my things, I'm worrieds about someone getting me.
Although we need to take some responsibility for our own safety, its the men who need to be held accountable.

An absolutely brilliant piece and it's so heartening to hear it from a man. My husband shares just about all your views I am sure. But he appears to believe it's perfectly fine to read page 3 and news in briefs if he happens to encounter the sun lying about on trains or at work. I feel deeply offended by this. As a pretty strident feminist and someone who feels strongly that page 3 has no place in a clvilised and equal society, i am shocked and disappointed that he claims to be anti-page3 yet doesn't boycott it when he encounters it. He says that he doesn't buy it and that he would read a racist leaflet if it was lying about on the train (despite not being a racist) because he views it as just being inquisitive about the world around him. I tried my hardest to convince him and explain why I felt offended by his view, but nothing seemed to resonate and he dismissed my arguments as 'plain wrong'. I am wondering what your thoughts on this are and whether you think I am wrong to expect someone who says they are anti-page3 to boycott it when they see it in public.

My mother, a pharmacist, would never work for Boots until the end of her career (2 years ago, aged 88) because until they were forced to stop by the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 they ran different pay scales for male and female employees doing the same job. God bless that piece of legislation, but still a long way to go with workplace problems. Enjoyed your blog, well done.
